In an initiative to have uninterrupted work flow due to power failure, The Department of Post, Government of India is going to provide a solar power back-up for the computer systems. Each of the  1.30 lakh branch offices across the country will get solar panel soon after they complete computerization and networking process.

Speaking about the same Killi Kruparani, Union Minister of State for Information Technology and Communications, said, “This is to ensure that system works uninterruptedly even when if there is no power supply and beneficiaries of social security schemes get payments.”

According to the report, India Post has 1.55 lakh post offices and all of them will be networked under the Rs 4,700 crore IT induction programme which would be completed by March 2014.  A pilot project will be launched in Srikakulam (Andhra Pradesh) soon. India Post will begin work on the country’s fourth Automated Mail Processing Centre (AMPC) in Hyderabad in the next few weeks. The other two centres are located at Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

The Department of Post has been upgrading its system from quite some time now. In 2012 Government had formulated  to computerize post offices in rural areas. Last month, the department partnered  IT major Infosys to manage and implement a platform that will transform its rural operations.

India Post covers about 200 million customers across the country offers small savings schemes, postal life insurance, rural postal life insurance, pension payments and wage disbursements amongst other services. The department also launched  electronic version of Indian Postal Order eIPOfor NRI’s to file RTI application and pay for the same.

I think India Post is striving hard to improve its system and it has received significant accolades for same. The solar back -up plan is another effort by the department to raise its bar even further.
